1.2 Billion people, 1411 tigers!

February 10 18 Comments Category: India

India, a country where 1.2 billion people are living, there are just 1411 tigers left. And we Indians call Tiger as our National Animal. Its a shame on people who are on a rage to destroy this species just to make their living.

Tigers are a part of the cat family. They were seen in a great number, and over a few years, the number of these tigers have been reduced to a countable number.

Why is the number so low?

Its nothing natural. Everything is due to the human evil activities. A couple main reasons behind this -

  • Clearing of forests and habitats
  • Poaching for tiger skins (supposedly for use in medicinal field, and shopping industry)

Cleaning up of forests and habitats hits tigers’ lifestyle in many ways. The space they live in, gets reduced and also with the same, the prey like deer, wild boars and pigs, cattle etc. are reducing in such an extent that the survival by feeding on them is getting harder. Depletion in habitat lands, also makes it hard for tigers to breed successfully. Hence the halt in increase in population of tigers. The number of cubs born, we used to see years back, is not the same now. It has gone to fractions of what it was.

Poaching, has been a big business in India lately. Skin of tigers is being used for medicinal purposes, and also its used by richies around for royalty showcases of theirs! The lives of animals are claimed for such cheap purposes.

There are 80 national parks, and 441 wildlife sanctuaries, of which a very few have a suitable habitat for survival of tigers (yeah the most fierce animals in kingdom isn’t having a royal life.. they are just surviving) and there are 7 national parks that have restricted zones for tigers to freely roam around, and live better..

  • Panna National Park
  • Manas Tiger Reserve
  • Kanha Tiger Reserve
  • Sariska National Park
  • Bandhavgarh Park
  • Ranthambore Tiger Reserve
  • Sundarban National Park

How can you save the tiger?

If the number of tigers keeps reducing, the entire food ecosystem is going to shift to a dangerous way! You have to help save the tigers and help the count grow, rather than reduce!

  • Spread the word by letting people know about the current situation. Share ideas on how to conserve the tigers, educate people about it.
  • Be a responsible tourist: The wilderness is to be experienced and not to be disturbed and polluted. Follow the forest department guidelines when visiting any wilderness area, tiger reserve in particular.
  • Write to the policy makers: If you are really concerned and feel that more needs to be done for tiger conservation, then write polite letters to the decision makers – the Prime Minister, the Minister for Environment and Forests or even your local MP.
  • Informing the nearest police station: If you know of any information on poaching or trade of illegal wildlife. You can also contact TRAFFIC- an organisation fighting the powerful poachers and pass on the information to them.
  • Reducing pressure on natural resources: By reducing the use of products derived from forests, such as timber and paper.

Hope we see India with a better number of National animal soon!

  1. Its heartening to know only 1411 are left. Its now or Never! what’s making me sad is that the govt is taking no concrete steps in this matter. I have been doing my bit by tweeting and telling the world about this, only hoping that something will be done.

  2. Didn’t notice Jim Corbett National Park in your list above. To my mind, that will have more number of tigers than all of the above put together :-)

  14. In the past 100 years, the tiger population in the world has fallen from 100,000 to 3500. Our ancestors did not have all the comforts we have, but led a much happier life based on Vedic principles. They left us a beautiful world to live harmoniously with other living beings. Now, in the name of develoment ans modernization, it seems humans have become worse than animals. The Government is unable to ban sale of alcohol, meat, etc. But at least why not use the taxed money to save these poor animals ?
