Scenes where Five Points Someone and 3 Idiots were similar
Do read the other posts – Where Five Points Someone and 3 Idiots were different and Chetan Bhagat vs 3 Idiots – a Publicity Stunt?.
Chetan Bhagat claims that the entire book “Five Points Someone”and the movie “3 Idiots” were similar, he is partially right about it. The main concept was taken from the book, but not the moral of the whole story. The story is about 3 friends, who newly joined an engineering college in Delhi. And this was the basic concept of the story which is all needed to make a new story, adding masala into it.

So here are all the scenes where you would see the similarity in the story of the book, and the story in the movie -
- 3 friends, join the engineering college
- Raju, the role played by Sharman Joshi – similar to that to book – Dad suffering from paralysis and mom a teacher
- Rancho (played by Aamir Khan) – similarly creative as the Ryan character in the book.
- MACHINE – and the definition, explanation.. similar to that in the book
- Neha (the girl in the book, daughter of a professor) and Pia (Kareena’s role, daughter of dean of the college) are the same kinds.
- The girl helps the hero in stealing the question papers, by giving them the keys of the room
- The professor talks against their friendship most of the times.. similar to that in the movie
- Suicide attempt by a student in the college, done by Raju in the movie
In my view, these similarities are more than enough to show that the script writer Abhijat Joshi has copied the main concept. Any basic writer can add-in a few changes or special scenes to make the story different. But the original work won’t be lost from the reader’s minds if they have read the book already.
