Kaminey Review – forry, time wafte
First off, a kind-of warning for those reading. Read this review only if -
- You didn’t watch Kaminey, and don’t want to watch it. This review will make you more comfortable.
- If my review would make no influence on your expectations on the movie.
- If you are someone who doesn’t expect much before entering the movie hall.
Ok, i was taken to the peak of expectations by the reviews given by Rediff, NDTV, ApunKaChoice.. and everything went reverse in the theater. Am not still sure why people liked it, or I am wrong after watching this movie back-to-back with the full comedy “Life Partner” movie which didn’t bring any seriousness into me during this movie.
I was carried away somewhere into the dark world of confusion that where are all the characters popping out from suddenly, and first half was nothing but utter confusion. Everything taken with the dark background, except for sometime where Priyanka Chopra and Shahid(Gattu) were to their best.
Although the story was not bad, the direction, camera stuff etc. were just over-expected by me. First half was just me sitting and wondering how the team got such a stupid idea to make the movie in such a confusing way. Total mix-up of both the roles of Shahid – Gattu and Charlie. Charlie lisps, while Guddu stammers, but both were good!

I prepared myself for the war between the movie and my sleep, but the songs kept me well awake, or else this review would have already ended with the half-seen movie! I was trying to catch every flaw made, but I would have jolted them down here if there were few.. the whole movie is a big box of mistakes.
Vishal Bhardwaj after such a good Omkara, you just dropped in with a bad one. Effects are given by acting, not my total to-and-fro movements of the camera.
Cinemax, Hyderabad.. I never heard people clapping their hands when the movie ends. That was the first time i experienced that, with everyone applauding, but not for appreciation.
The big groups of Gundas, who should have created some thrill, instead were a part of comedy all the time. And as already told, Priyanka and Shahid gets the credit for making people sit there till the end of the movie. They did their part very well. The S replaced by F in Charlie’s talks, added some masala in the movie.
Final words:
If you are thinking to have some better entertaining weekend, go for Life Partner. It will make you laugh. Kaminey will leave you speechless and you would feel you wasted 2 hours for nothing. Still, if you did not like the movie Luck, you go watch Kaminey as your taste is totally opposite to mine, and you would like it.
Do not go with any expectations, then there are chances for you to like it.

@prianca,
You are true with one statement but not with the other..
Stars – Priyanka and Shahid both were awesome and did pretty well..
But we always don’t go to watch the stars.. do we? And Govinda, for me at least, is someone whose movies i would never try to miss. He’s always at his best. Keep Tushaar aside, he was not much to talk about, in the movie.
Anyways, its my view as u said

(Warning: Spoilers Inside)
I went to watch this movie after hearing a lot of positive opinions about it.
I was told by people… “this movie is Indian flavored Quentin Tarantino type movies”, “this is India’s answer to Hollywood”, “you can’t miss even a minute of this movie… if you do it won’t make sense”, “this is very slickly made movie”. I was all excited and looking forward to this movie and cam back a little disappointed. Looking back, this movie had great potential to be everything that people opined about it, but it some how ended up lacking some key underlying aspects of being a mega-hit.
The first 20 minutes of movie felt like it was not going any where and the producer wasn’t sure how to or what they wanted to communicate.
The story is about twins growing up in Bombay slums – predictably one sibling is the sweet simple stuttering hero who has the girl and the other is a tough, nasty street smart troublemaker who gambles and hustles.
The sibling on the dark-side hustle hard in order to recover 100K of his gambling money and gets involved in a drug exchange program involving corrupt drug-enforcement cops at the same location.
The sweet, simple sibling has his share of grief when he discovers that the girl who he just got pregnant is the younger sister of a local gangster-turned-politician. To add to his grief, his would be gangster politician brother-in-law dislikes him since he is not local to the state (Jai Mahrashtra
The movie has some added nasty character by way of the buyer of the drugs who in turn has some visitors from Africa exchanging the drugs for blood diamonds.
The movie picks up some pace at around the mid point of the movie – just before the interval. Towards the end of the movie, the director and producers seemed tired and rush through to close it.
Now what I thought could have been done differently to make this a real classy affair:
1. Too many songs – Songs should have been kept to minimum and as background tunes to flavor scenes. That would have saved some precious time and made space for some important stuff.
2. The violence should have been laid out better – All the killings were depicted poorly. The scenes were not well laid out and even though many characters are killed, one does not feel a sense of fear or coldness since the camera positioning and scene layouts are done very poorly.
3. Speaking of poorly setup and executed scenes… the camera work is terrible. Too many and too much close-ups, make most of the movie un-memorable. Good and successful movies are full of scenes which are visually captivating and make the movie and its story absolutely memorable. Kaminey has no such scenes. The producers and directors had several opportunities to create a visually captivating movie but failed miserably at it. There are too many close-ups and too many scenes short from behind people, behind things with shakes and movements which is normally done to make the audience feel they are part of the action. In case or Kaminey that concept is over-used and instead messes up the movie.
4. Due to poorly laid-out story telling the movie is rushed at spots and makes one feel that is it poorly edited.
5. The sound recoding and sound effects are good. The background music is good, although the sound mixing is sub-optimal at a few critical spots in the movie.
6. All actors have performed well. Shahid Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Amol Gupte, et al have all done a fairly decent job.
7. Costumes: Not a huge task, but I wish they would have shown some of the characters (apart from the cops) with short hair and clean shaven look… Just about every character has long hair flowing all over the camera and screen and a scruffy unkept stubbly face.
As we left the theater, someone behind me commented that every character in this movie looked like they needed a shower, shave and a haircut. I silently chuckled in agreement.

i mean different ppl have different opinions, i thought this movie was good, not great but good, omkara n maqbool by the same director are still a lil better, but honestly if you liked life partner more than this then that pretty much sums up your general opinion of movies….
also there is a big difference in govinda etc type of comedy which is not really comedy but over the top crude inane gibberish that passes of as humor…which is what one sees in the dumbed down supposedly comedy shows that are not really funny, that are telecast all over the nation….enjoyed by millions of 10yr old n also adults who posses IQ’s in the range of 10 n 20

hi Chetan after reading your review on Kimeny and your comparison of Kaminey with Life partners shows you have little wired choice of movies. Your comparison has no sense. I agree with Laxman different people havae different opinion. But i recommend you to read aspects of judging a movie before you post reviews of this nature!
